An unassuming, young man Tang Lung (Bruce Lee) arrives in Rome, having been sent by his family to help out a friend, Chen Ching-hua (Nora Miao). Having just taken over the family restaurant after her father's death, Ching-hua has run into local mobsters who are forcing her to sell out. Tang Lung turns out to be heaven-sent. Though a humble country boy, Lung is an adept martial artist. the gangsters turn up to cause trouble, Lung dispatches them easily with his lightning speed kung fu.
His interference angers the gang leader who orders Lung's termination. When attempts to kill him fail, the gang sends for American karate champion Colt (Chuck Norris). Undaunted, Lung accepts the challenge at the Coliseum and gears himself for a battle royal.
