After This Our Exile

As Boy is about to go to school he senses that something amiss. He answers the telephone only to have the other person hang up on him. His mother gives him money for his birthday, but his birthday is still a month away. Then, while his mother walks him to the bus stop, she stops a neighbor and asks them to take a picture of her and her son. As Boy waits for the school bus to leave, he sees his mother looking after him with a heartsick expression.

A few minutes later, Boy decides to get off the bus and run back home. He sees his mother packing her clothing into a suitcase and runs immediately to the nearby restaurant where his father works at. He pleads with his father to stop his mother from leaving them.
