Ipponmatsu, a wandering gambler, and Kuroki, a samurai meet by accident. Both are on a quest. Ipponmatsu seeks the murderer of his father who was brutally slain by a sword wielding samurai at Sasago Pass five years earlier. The killer has eluded the authorities after robbing an envoy of 4,000 Ryo and leaving five dead guards at the side of the road. The main suspect is the missing sixth guard Yaichiro. Kuroki, the son of Yaichiro, is out to clear his father's name.
